Billy and Vivian West have been growing chickens for 20 years at West Acres near Tyaskin, Maryland. Billy’s interest in chickens began at age 12 when his father built a chicken house. Billy helped his dad until he was 19 years old and began looking for a property of his own. His operation started with one house and has grown to two houses, in which he raises more than 236,000 birds each year for Mountaire Farms. Additionally, Billy leases his uncle’s farm that includes two more houses and works off the farm in marine construction. He is helped on the farm by his wife Vivian, who is a nurse, and their two sons – 16-year-old Austin and 11-year-old Braden. In the time he has been growing chickens, Billy has observed many technological advances within chicken houses. Regarding successful chicken production, Billy feels that it requires “giving it all you have to raise the best bird possible.” We agree with Billy, and we are delighted to have Billy and Vivian West as Outstanding Growers for 2015.
