SELBYVILLE, DE – March 17, 2022 – An overwhelming majority of Mountaire employees at the Selbyville processing plant who are members of the Teamsters Union Local 355 voted to remove the union Thursday, according to the National Labor Relations Board who counted the votes.
Employees voted 140-29 (82 percent) to decertify the union. The election took place at the company’s Selbyville plant where employees cast ballots in-person from 5 a.m. to 8 a.m. and again from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. An NLRB official oversaw the election.
“For the first time since 1977, our Selbyville plant is union free, and it was our hourly employees who made that happen,” said Phillip Plylar, President of Mountaire Farms. “We could not be prouder of our team there who put our employees first every day.”
Selbyville is the only processing plant owned by Mountaire Farms where unions are present. These unions have been part of the plant since it was purchased by Mountaire in 1977.
In December, employees who were part of the United Food Commercial Workers (UFCW) union at the Selbyville plant voted overwhelmingly to decertify that union during a mail-in ballot process. The final vote count of 356-80 was certified by the NLRB in late December.
After that election, a Teamsters union employee gathered signatures and submitted a petition to the NLRB in early February asking to decertify the Teamsters union.
The election becomes official once it’s certified by the NLRB in the coming weeks
